This core department was established in the year 2001. It supports the other Engg. courses in the first year. The department offers a four-year course leading to the Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering. Basic Engineering graphics and mechanics with computer based skill is a must for all Engineers and Technologists and hence this department plans to develop as a hub for inter departmental research and development and project initiatives. The faculty has been drawn from Industry and Academia, having specialization in manufacturing, metallurgy, design, automobile, thermal engineering, energy, and CAD/CAM and Environmental engineering and project management.
The department is headed by professor with 36 year of experience in process and projects, entrepreneurship teaching and research. The department already boasts of an ultramodern machine shop and special purpose machines laboratory. The CAD/CAM lab has been installed with AutoCAD 2005, Mechanical Desktop 2005, Auto Desk inventor professional software, CNC lathe and Milling machines with simulation package FANUC.
The department has established a centre for Renewable and environmentally Sustainable Technologies, (CREST), which concentrates on energy related projects. The department has professional bodies including SAE – INDIA and ISTE students’ chapter functioning under it. CAD software training courses on Pro-E and Ansys are being conducted on the campus. Mechanical Engineering Students Association (MESA) along with training and placement cell organizes technical seminars, inplant training and Industrial visits, An energy club functions on the campus. It collaborates with organizations like NTPC, BHEL to promote awareness in energy conservation and utilization.
A centre of excellence is being developed as an inter departmental initiative of the Mechanical, Electrical and Biotechnology Departments with the name Centre for Renewable and Environmentally Sustainable Technologies (CREST). This center will Concentrate on Research projects in Renewable Energy Areas.
