As Principal of this college it is my privilege to place before you the annual report of the college for the academic year 2004-05. It has been a hectic year an exciting year and a fast paced year. It was as though we had just started the academic year and now we are reach the closing stages. But it has been a year of satisfaction because we have taken a few more definite steps towards the making of a great institution Shri Andal Alagar College of Engineering, the vision and dream of our Founder. |

| INFRASTRUCTURE |
| |
| We shall begin with the infrastructure. We have completed 10 more classrooms in the academic block with an addition of 20,000 sq.ft. Two floors of the ambitious Hi-tech with a built-up area totalling 47,500 sq.ft. block have been occupied with the CSE & IT departments on the ground floor and Library on the 1s' floor finding their permanent location. The 2nd floor of the men's hostel has been completed adding another 14,800 sq.ft. to the living quarters. With these additions we have now a total built-up area of 2,50,000 sq.ft. Another 90,000 sq.ft. is under various stages of completion like the 2nd floor of the Hi-Tech block. On 1st floor of academic block mechanical engineering block. 3rd floor of Gent's hostel and ladies hostel accommodation on the campus. We hope to complete within the next three months. Along with the civil works this play fields have also been reached. The cricket pitch has been laid at considerable cost. The football and volleyball grounds have also become functional. |

| COMPUTER LABORATORIES |

| We have added 100 more latest version computer systems to the existing 220 this year and we have added important software like AutoDesk for the CAD/CAM Laboratory. | ACADEMIC |
| |
| There has been steady progress on the academic front and I am proud to say that among the 75 odd colleges that were started along with us in 2001 we are at the top in this of all round development -Academic infrastructure and other facilities. |

| There has been a steady buildup in the faculty strength and at present in have 65. many of them already post graduates and doctorates or in various stages of completion. The supporting staff strength is now 27 other of staff are ministerial, security etc., total 45 on the campus. Totally there has been a increase of during the current academic year. |

The students performance in the university examinations has been improving every semester. In order to help students perform better a mentioning programme has been started whereby the higher ranked students in a class will take 5 - 6 students under their charge along with a teacher for improving and giving them confidence. This experiment is slowly beginning to show results. The English department has been strengthened with a view of improving communication and soft skills and overall personality development among the students.

| Students Admissions have been most satisfying this year. All the seats under the SWS were filled except two, And over 90 % were filled under the management quota. |

| This has been a busy year with a number of Industrial visits, seminars, invited talks, guest lectures, workshops and a national conference for the first time on the campus. | Prominent academicians from institutions of higher learning who were invited for Guest Lectures included Dr. A. Kannan, Asst. Prof. Dr. R. Saravanan, Dr. Hari Ilango, Dr. Shri Hari Nagore, all from Anna University, Dr. Mani, Dr. Mohan, from IIT, Dr. Dhananjayan , from Pondicherry Engineering College & Prof. Kayalvizhi from Annamalai University. Prof. N. Balakrishnan from McMaster University, Ontario, Canada was our chief guest at the Science Exhibition cum Open House 2005. This was an opportunity forour students to show case their Scientific and Engineering potential. It also some school students along with parts with a radius of 50 km visiting our campus to get a first hand idea of the faculties available here. |

| Educational tours are a part of the Engineering students learning process and accordingly our final year students branch wise have made educational cum sight seeing tours to the following places. Bangalore, Mysore, Coimbatore, Ooty, Cochin, Munnar & Trivandrum. |

| PLACEMENT & TRAINING |

| As part of the Industry Institute initiative a full?fledged Placement & Training cell has started operating on the campus and although our final year students are yet to complete 60 of them have already found placement in various industries. Another 40 of them have been short listed by reputed software companies to be inducted as soon as they fulfill their course requirements. The remaining students are being groomed in personality development communication & soft skills to enable them to be accepted immediately into industry. From the next academic year, we propose to belled into the regular timetable a special course in personality development and other skill development for the second, third & final year students. So that they are well prepared for taking up challenging jobs in industry and the service sector. |

| ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES |

| All the departments were involved in organizing workshops & Seminars as part of the association activities. The department of Mathematics organised a workshop " Application on Mathematics an Engineering Education" on loth July 2004. The resource person was Dr. J. Pandurangan, Professor, MIT. The CSE department organised a one day workshop on ".NET & Network Security". The speaker was Mr. Vijayarangan, SETS. At the Inauguration of Association of Mechanical an interested talk was delivered by Mr. R. Chandrasekar, CEO, Autornative Ancillary services (P) Ltd., on 5 th August 2004. The department of Mechanical Engineering organised a one day workshop on Renewable Energy with specialist speakers from the Institute of Energy Studies, Anna university, IIT, &',ITCOT participating. |

| A notable event for the first time on the campus was "National Conference on Embedded Technology - NCET - 2005". , A national conference on embedded technology organised by the ECE department. This two day event was largely attended by faculty from engineerirtg colleges all over India and the resource person were from IIT, MIT, Anna University Main Campus, Annamalai University & Pondicherry Engineering College. Biology" and a workshop on "System Biology & Drug discovery". Dr. Uma Maheswari, HOD / BT was conferred the Young Scientist Award at the 92 nd Indian Science Congress held at Ahamedabad. In the state of Tamilnadu among the BT departments, our department has been rated 4 th place in survey conducted by AC Nielson & Sun Group. | Believing in the saying a healthy body makes a healthy mind, we have built sports activity hour into the regular timetable and also from 03.30 p.m. to 06.00 p.m. on all working days, Thus physical education has become integral part of our curriculam with extensive play fields being developed and also an excellent indoor gym, all under the supervision of a full time Physical Director. Our budding Sportsmen have been participating in a number of zonal & university Sports & athletics meets. |

| The basic framework has been laid for the creation of two centers of excellence, centre for Renewables and Environmentally Sustainable Technologies (CREST). This which will involve inter departTental initiatives between the Mechanical, Biotechnology & Electrical & Electronics Engineering branches of the college for encouraging research and development projects in the area of renewable & sustainable energy. The centre for technology exchange entrepreneurship and management (CT) has been initiated to encourage and faster research and scaling up of projects acting as an incubator towards entrepreneurship and management of the same. This would also be a platform for one to one interaction with industry. Under this centre the college already signed an MOU with M/s. The entire college population part take their meals in a most modern and hygienically designed mess hall / kitchen. The food quality and services is rated among the best in self?financing colleges throughout the state. |

| We have a very efficient transport system with a fleet of 15 buses bringing students from various parts of the city and also from Kalpakkam, Kancheepuram & Acharapakkam. |

| The Food and Transport is free for all Staff Members. |

| We have sponsored a unique health insurance scheme where by the Students and his earning parent is protected. In the event of demise of either of them the settlement is done for the family. This scheme has been instituted with the help of the New India Insurance Company and has already benefited two families. |

| Community Service |

| The College and Management is firmly committed to the community around accordingly us. We have adopted the Mamandur village and under take the following programmes annually |

- Free Medical and Dental Checkup
- Computer Training for School Children
- Foundation has laid for a Coinmunity hall in the Village
- Every year on the founder's birth day,a massive blood donation drive is conducted on our campus with support for the Chengalpattu Medical College to benefit the community around us.

An NSS wing has been opened on the campus and is already very active. They were involved in cycle rally for creating AIDS awareness and also conducted a workshop for the students on the subject with help from the District Health authorities. |

| Community development is at core of any project activity and accordingly we have been involved in conducting training for rural schools, for women police personnel in the Taluk and for school teachers from the District. |

Two tragic occurrences during the year were the Kumbakonarn School fire accident and the Tsunami disaster. In both cases the college management staff and students have spontaneously responded to the crisis situation and donated in cash and kind for the victims families. The founder, the chairperson and the Secretary have personally visited the affected families and offered there help. |

Our founder has a deep commitment for the cause of the Tamil People and Tamil Language. In order to encourage and faster development of the Tamil language, we have inaugurated the Valluvar Senthamizh Sangam on our campus on the 4 th March 2005. |

| Three of our Students have also been involved in the 'Kaniyam 2004' projects by Anna University were by team of final year students of our college. This programme comprise Mr. K. Shankar, Mr. V.K. Ilamkumanan and Mr. S. Senthil Anand have come up with cheap hardware device that would help in handwriting recognition. Ultimately this would help in propagating the use of Tamil language in computer applications. |
